Data visualization best-practices

  • Display a table, for each item
    • Display an indicator to highlight whether the performance for this item is positive or negative
    • Display the item name
    • Display the rank of this item in the overall list
    • Display the share of the item compared to the overall performance (only applicable for additive KPIs)
    • Display the cumulative share (only applicable for additive KPIs)
    • Display the actual KPI performance + a mini-bar giving a quick overview of the relative weight of this item in the list
    • Display the reference (Budget, Forecast, Previous Year…) + a mini-bar giving a quick overview of the relative weight of this item in the list
    • Show the variance between actual performance and the reference
    • Show the variance in %
  • Allow the user to dynamically select the KPI he wants to analyze (for instance moving from a Revenue analysis to a Gross Margin analysis)
  • Allow the user to select the analytical axis by which he wants to split the performance
  • Allow the user to dynamically select the reference (Budget, Forecast, Previous Year…) against which to compare the actual KPI performance
  • Allow the user to select point of view on data: Month-To-Date, Quarter-To-Date, Year-to-Date or Moving-Annual-Total
