Data Visualization Best-Practices For Trends Highlight

More than any other chart, text is often the more impactful visualization you can have. This one highlights the monthly growth of a KPI from the first to the last analyzed period. Not only showing a graphical evolution of the KPI value, it display the actual growth (in absolute and relative value) but as well display the top and worst performance (in value and variance)

Data visualization best-practices

  • Display a sentence with the assessment of the performance growth
  • Show an indication of what the overall performance looks like
  • Display a line chart showing the evolution of the KPI performance across time
    • Color the line based on the growth performance
    • Only display to first and last value so that the visualization is not over-loaded
  • Display bar charts showing the best and worst contributions
    • Display both best and worst performances in absolutes and relative value
    • Use horizontal bars so that the chart is easy to read
    • Add the value of the KPI at the right of the bar (and not inside)
    • Only display first values and use a scroll bar to access to other items
    • Sort the table in descending order to show top values first
  • Allow the user to dynamically select the KPI he wants to analyze (for instance moving from a Revenue analysis to a Gross Margin analysis)
  • Allow the user to dynamically select the axis of analysis (for instance moving from top Countries to Top Customers)
  • Allow the user to select the periodicity of analysis: Year, Semester, Quarter, Month, Week, Date
